Fall Retreat

About:

retreatAs Gail has a new book out in fall 2026, the fall writing retreat has been moved to 2027. Please contact Gail's office to put your name on the interest list.

Gail hosts this week-long fall writing retreat at the Sorrento Centre in Sorrento, British Columbia. It's a perfect writing getaway both for writers in the Shuswap and Thompson-Okanagan regions and for those who are visiting the beautiful landscape found in so much of Gail's writing.

You'll enjoy five morning master classes with Gail, each on a different aspect of craft, that will help you develop your project to the fullest. While you can expect fun exercises and discussion during the master classes, we will not critique each other's work. No extra reading! Your focus will be on your project alone.

Gail also offers each writer a private blue pencil session during the retreat, so be prepared to email Gail a sample of your writing (up to 3,000 words) in August.

Write and relax:

Following the morning workshop sessions, soak in a relaxed, restful atmosphere in which to write for the rest of the day. Take quiet walks through the lovely Sorrento Centre property and down to the beach or explore the Shuswap. The centre is walking distance from the village of Sorrento, which has most amenities. Get to know Gail and the other writers during meals.

Count on an experience that will jumpstart your project and transform your writing life.

centreWhen:

Fall 2027

Where:

Sorrento Centre, 1159 Passchendaele Road Sorrento, BC.

Where to stay:

You are responsible for arranging your own accommodation and meals, but we've made that easy. We've arranged for affordable rooms at the Sorrento Centre, the location of the retreat. For the full retreat experience, we recommend that even local writers stay in this wonderful, rustic location.

Once you've registered with us, book your room at the Sorrento Centre by going to the Sorrento Centre Online Registration and click on your package choice, or by calling (250) 675-2421 or toll-free at 1 866-694-2409. Ask for the Richardson Lodge, and for the fall writing retreat with Gail Anderson-Dargatz. We recommend the meal package as we'll get to know each other over meal times.

Our retreat begins with a relaxed meet and greet over supper in the Richardson Lodge cafeteria on Sunday. Morning master classes run each morning from Monday to Friday. Our week ends with our final master class on Friday.

Checkout time is 10 a.m. on Friday, so you'll need to vacate before our final workshop. Another event begins at the Richardson Lodge on the evening of the last day of the retreat, so if you need to stay that night because of travel, let staff at the Sorrento Centre know on booking your room. They'll help you out.

How to get there:

You'll find a map at the bottom on the Sorrento Centre website. Writers are, of course, responsible for their transportation to the Sorrento Centre. Ebus offers daily service between Kamloops (at Sahali Mall) and Sorrento. The Ebus drop-off location at Sorrento is within walking distance of the Sorrento Centre. The Kamloops Airport Shuttle provides direct service between Kamloops airport and Sorrento, about an hour's drive.

Where to eat:

An affordable meal package is available for you at the Sorrento Centre dining room for the length of your stay. Meals are served in the Richardson Lodge, the same building that houses our morning master classes. Again, we'll get to know each other during meal times, so we recommend taking advantage of this affordable option. You'll see meal plan details when you register for accomodation on the Sorrento Centre site.

There are also restaurants and grocery stores in Sorrento and Blind Bay. You're only a half hour drive from Salmon Arm and less than an hour from Kamloops.

Cost:

As Gail has a new book out in fall 2026, the fall writing retreat has been moved to 2027. Please contact Gail's office to put your name on the interest list.

The cost for the retreat is $875 plus GST/HST of your province.

Pay to register before May 31 to receive a $75 discount using this code: EARLYBIRD

As seating is limited, the full fee is due on registration to hold your place. The registration fee will not be refunded after September 1 as considerable cost, time and effort goes into the retreat before it begins.

Contact Gail's office for more or to put your name on the interest list.

Testimonials

"Gail’s model suited me right down to the ground, exactly the right combination of close reading, thoughtful feedback, and enough space to work these questions through in my own time. She’s an intelligent and experienced manuscript midwife with an uncanny ability to see to the heart of what I was trying to do. I appreciate her guidance immensely!"

Tara Gereaux

"Gail is an incredible editor. She has an innate ability to understand what I’m trying to do with my writing and to help me see what I need to do to get where I want. The best part about working with her is her supportive, encouraging approach. She’s a writer, she gets it – she knows how hard writing can be – but when I’m working with Gail, it always feels a little bit easier and a little more fun. Can’t recommend her highly enough."

-- Tara Gereaux has published two books of fiction and was the recipient of the Colleen Bailey Memorial Award from the Saskatchewan Foundation for the Arts, and a REVEAL Indigenous Art Award from the Hnatyshyn Foundation.

"Gail's developmental edits were superb. Her attention to the manuscript's structure, to themes and emotional resonances, and to the character creation were at once challenging, sophisticated and encouraging. And she draws on a range of excellent resources. I've not seen anything quite like it in twenty-five years in the industry."
